Stop Motion Animation 6-week Class

This course will be an introduction to stop motion animation and puppet building, giving students a fun and approachable experience creating motion media. Each class will cover basic animation principles, timing, and build concepts. There will be a short lecture and demonstration before open studio time when students will focus on building their individual projects. Each student will leave with a hand-built puppet and a 10-15 second animation.
Week 1
Introduction to stop motion animation and examples
Lecture on the principles of animation and timing
Studio time to play with cameras and timing
Week 2
Introduction to building with example build
Studio time to accomplish skeleton and basic frame
Week 3
Character example build
Studio time for students to finish puppets
Week 4
Lecture and example clips on walk cycles
Studio time for students to finish creating puppets
Begin animating
Week 5
Studio time for animating
Week 6
Lecture and example of editing and post production
Studio time to edit clips
Final statements

Hannah Kosmas is a local artist native to Rockbridge County. She graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in Animation, and has worked as a freelance illustrator and animator since 2019. Her professional work includes independently published children’s books and TV series, and she is currently pursuing her Virginia Teaching Certificate in order to teach elementary school art. While she has experience with traditional 2D illustration and animation, her specialty is stop-motion animation. Her personal work is heavily influenced by her experience growing up in rural Appalachia, and centers around themes of family, connection with nature, and local folklore.
