BOTANICALS IN BLUE: A CYANOTYPE WORKSHOP

Botanicals in Blue: A Cyanotype Workshop with Cary Oliva

Saturday, September 12th - 10AM-4PM

$175 (includes all supplies) Bring your own lunch.

Spend a day exploring the beautiful, sun-powered art of cyanotype printing using leaves, flowers, and other botanical treasures. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to compose and expose your own cyanotype prints, transforming delicate plant forms into striking images in shades of Prussian blue.

We’ll cover the basics of preparing cyanotype materials, arranging botanicals, exposing prints to sunlight, and washing and finishing your work. Along the way, you’ll experiment with composition, transparency, layering, and the wonderful surprises that make every cyanotype unique. We will experiment with both dry & wet cyanotype printing as well as printing on different substrates.

No previous experience is necessary. Come ready to play with light, plants, and the magic of the sun—and leave with a collection of one-of-a-kind botanical prints.

Limited to 4 students with plenty of personal attention. Weather dependent. Rain date will be proposed if need be closer to the date.

Cary Oliva is originally from Virginia, having grown up in a small community near the water. Feeling there was more out there to be explored, she was lucky enough to study abroad in high school, spending her junior year studying art in Italy and continued taking classes there also her junior year of college having earned her BA in Italian Studies and Fine Art from Dickinson College. After college, Cary lived in New York City where she learned about 35mm photography and more alternative techniques and started experimenting with Polaroid manipulations & transfers. She found both techniques completely additive and hasn’t stopped playing around with those and other alternative techniques since! She has exhibited her work in numerous shows around Virginia, has taught adults and kids both art and Italian, enjoys taking classes herself, cats & most animals as well as traveling with her artist-husband with whom she started The Workshop at Timber Ridge in 2024 after spending a year and a half project managing the renovation of the dirt-floor horse barn. She and Judd love their new/old home in the Shenandoah Valley and look forward to continuing to welcome new students to The Workshop!
